2. Fill out all available fields
Despite the numerous opportunities that Google offers, many businesses fail to take advantage of the chance to provide valuable information for potential customers through their Business Profile, leaving certain fields unfilled.
Make sure to provide additional information along with the basics like your phone number, address, website URL, and hours of operation, so that customers can have a comprehensive understanding of your business prior to visiting your website.
To optimize your Google Business Profile, make sure to complete the following fields.
- Description: Add a business description (up to 750 characters) so users can learn about what you have to offer, what makes you unique, and why they should work with you.
- Products or Services: Add relevant products or services–these will show up directly on your Google Business Profile.
- Hours: Aside from your typical hours of operation, you can also add holiday hours and more hours, including online service hours, senior hours, pickup hours, and more.
- From the business: Let your potential customers know how your business identifies (women-owned, Black-owned, veteran-owned, and more). This could sway potential customers looking to support businesses like yours.
- Accessibility: Accessibility is incredibly important. Let potential customers know about your accessibility options such as wheelchair-accessible restrooms or seating.
3. Add images (and videos)
Were you aware that businesses that upload images receive 42% more requests for directions? Individuals desire to have an idea of what they can anticipate from your business, regardless of whether they plan to visit your physical location or engage in curbside pick-up or a service.
Google provides suggestions for your Google Business Profile, encompassing various elements such as your logo, both the interior and exterior visuals of your business, a cover photo, videos, and additional options.
Below are some suggestions for the types of pictures and videos you can include in your Google Business Profile listing:
- Upload at least three photos of the interior of your business. This should give customers an idea of what to expect when they visit your business.
- Add at least three pictures of the outside of your business. Google suggests taking these pictures at different times of the day as well as from each direction a customer might approach your business.
- Add photos of your products, especially items that are the most popular. This can help entice some users to visit your business.
- Include pictures of your team (with their consent). These pictures should represent the services that you offer or highlight positive customer service experiences.
- You can also take a quick video using your smartphone to include if you don’t have a professionally produced video to use. Give a quick tour of your business, show your storefront, and include anything you think consumers may be interested in seeing.
4. Choose the right business categories
Maintaining the same primary business category in your Google Business Profile throughout the year is recommended. However, it can be beneficial to consider changing your secondary categories periodically, particularly if you provide varying services during specific seasons or if you are aware that consumers visit your establishment for specific reasons at different times throughout the year.
If you primarily sell sporting goods as a retailer, you have the option to modify your categories to cater to the current events. For instance, if you have cleaning and disinfecting products available, you can make appropriate adjustments to attract customers who are specifically searching for such items.
Google advises minimizing the number of categories used, hence it is recommended to limit them to a maximum of two or three.
Instructions on how to modify or revise the category of your Google Business.
- Go to your Google Business dashboard in Google Search.
- Click Edit profile.
- Scroll down to Business category and click the pencil icon to edit.
- Search for a primary category related to your business.
- Search for one or two secondary categories related to your business.
- Click Save.
After submitting your Google Business categories, they will be reviewed before appearing externally.
5. Get reviews from happy customers
In order to gain more visibility in local searches, potential customers are inclined to explore customer reviews to understand the purchasing experience of your product or service.
Customer reviews serve a purpose beyond internal evaluation. They possess significant influence over public perception of your business and can determine its online success. When dealing with an unfamiliar company, one often looks for reviews or testimonials to gain reassurance prior to making a purchase or entrusting them.
On the contrary, if you come across negative reviews or unfavorable feedback about the business at your initial encounter, you are likely to be more inclined to seek alternative options for the required products or services.
Customer reviews offer valuable insights into the desires and requirements of your customer base, as well as provide valuable feedback on potential deficiencies in your customer service or product quality.
It is vital for business owners to engage in communication with their users and potential customers, including those who may be dissatisfied or unhappy with the service they have received.
Using Google My Business to reply to reviews serves as a means to recover customer loyalty and also demonstrates transparency to individuals seeking information about your business.
In addition, you have the opportunity to address a negative review, propose a solution, and make amends. This response will be visible to the public and anyone who comes across your Google My Business profile. By actively engaging with dissatisfied customers, businesses significantly enhance their chances of securing loyal and returning clientele in the future.
6. Pay attention to questions
Under your name, address, and phone number, the questions and answers section functions as a “community” tool. It enables Google users to inquire about or respond to queries pertaining to your business. As the specialist, it is advisable for you to address each posed question.
Multiple answers can be given to questions, however, the answers that receive the most “likes” will be displayed as the main answer. Users have the option to click on a link to access additional answers if desired.
In the same manner, questions operate. Once a question receives a minimum of 3 likes, it will be visible on your GMB profile instead of the usual “See all questions” link. Should multiple questions garner more than 3 likes, the question with the highest number of likes will be featured on your profile.
7. Control the conversation
By asking your own questions, you gain additional control over the discussion regarding your business. Upload your frequently asked questions and provide informative answers to create a pre-site FAQ page. This will differentiate you from competitors and increase the likelihood of converting users into customers.
Do not forget to vote for your answers as well to ensure that your “From the owner” responses are consistently shown as the main replies. Stay attentive to your questions and answers section in order to keep your answers at the top.
Included are a few sample questions that could be beneficial, depending on your specific market and industry.
- Do you ship your products and/or services? If so, how do you go about shipping items to customers?
- What is the return or refund policy on your products?
- What methods are available for contacting customer service?
8. Include offers
It’s possible that you haven’t been utilizing a great feature on your Google Business Profile – offers. By including offers or promotions on your profile, they will be displayed directly in search results. This can greatly impact whether or not potential customers choose to try your business.
Here are a few recommendations for making offers on your Google Business Profile:
- Include a compelling title for your offer. It’s always best to lead with the cost savings that customers will benefit from!
- Add an eye-catching image to draw users to check out your offer.
- Fill out all fields for the offer, including the start and end date, any details, a link to redeem (if applicable), or a coupon code. (Hint: Using a specific coupon code can help you track your leads back to your Google Business Profile.)
- Change out your offers regularly to keep things fresh for searchers.
- Try an offer just for customers who found or saw your Google Business listing.
